On the journey to build a world where individuals with justice involvement are treated with dignity and respect—and given resources to thrive—2018 saw incredible leaps forward.
Because of support from our caring community, we made concrete steps to close Rikers Island jail complex, eliminate cash bail, expand diversion and alternatives to incarceration (ATI) programs, and advance campaigns to defend the rights of people at the intersection of the criminal, legal, and immigration systems.
Our 2018 Annual Report details these victories and more.
Inside, get to know some of the 7, 223 individuals we impacted. This includes people like Dawn Busanet, who reconnected with her love of writing in our Creative Arts program after spending time on Rikers, and Joseph Garrett, who is now inspiring others as a recovery peer specialist in our Scatter-Site Housing program after serving 35 years in prison.
Together, we also raised the age of criminal responsibility in New York to 18 years of age and helped restore family connections by pushing for a reversal of the vendor-only pilot program for prison care packages sent to New York State Department of Corrections facilities.
Community support was critical to these and the many other achievements we made. From Prepare for Release to Education, Substance Use Treatment to Family Services, the programs we create are informed and implemented by the people directly impacted by justice involvement. And they are sustained by people like you, through every dollar sent, every hour of community service offered, and every event attended.
True, restorative justice take a community. We are deeply grateful to have you in ours.
